Expert System, the leading provider of semantic software that discovers, classifies and interprets unstructured text information, today announces its participation in the EuroVoc Conference, where its customer, the Library of the Chamber of Deputies, located in Rome, will present a case study on the Chamber’s adoption of semantic technology for the classification of parlimentary documents.

“Eurovoc and parliamentary documents: A semi-automatic classification experience at the Italian Chamber of Deputies” will be presented on Friday, November 19 at the 2010 EuroVoc Conference, Mind the Lexical Gap, held in Luxembourg. The conference is the most important European event dedicated to the EuroVoc thesaurus and other multilingual controlled vocabularies and indexing tools facilitating interoperability and access to multilingual information.

The Library of the Chamber of Deputies selected Expert System’s COGITO® semantic technology to support the automatic classification of its documents, with the objective of optimizing its archival processes and complying to the EuroVoc standards, which are composed of 6645 categories. EuroVoc is the multilingual, multidisciplinary thesaurus covering the activities of the European Union, the European Parliament in particular. It contains terms in 22 EU languages, and is used by national and regional parliaments in Europe, as well as national governments and private users around the world.

The Cogito semantic platform understands the different shades of meanings of words in any text, based on the context in which it is used. Unlike traditional technologies based on keyword and statistics that can only guess the content of a text, semantic technology reads and interprets all knowledge trapped in unstructured text, finding hidden relationships, trends and events.

Thanks to Cogito, the automatic classification system adopted by the Chamber of Deputies analyzes and interprets each document, which is then quickly archived in the corresponding category, enabling the Chamber to achieve an optimal level of reliability and precision, with minimal errors.

“The success we have seen with the Chamber of Deputies demonstrates the effectiveness of semantic technology in resolving the daily problems of managing large quantities of documents of any configuration, as well as complexity of documents handled by the Chamber,” said Maurizio Mencarini, sales director, Intelligence Division for Expert System.

The EuroVoc Conference will be held November 18-19, 2010 in the Jean Monnet Building
