Easy Analytics with Cogito

Luca Scagliarini - 15 October 2015

How did viewers feel about the candidates in last night’s first Democratic presidential debate? Just for fun (and with no scientific objective), we looked to the top search and news feeds to gauge the impact of frontrunners Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders.

We extracted the top results from the three most popular search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) and the news feeds for Yahoo News and Google News. A real-time analysis of the results, specifically the blurb appearing under the link, revealed that Hillary Clinton was the “winner” with more positive sentiment than her famously grumpy opponent.

Just for fun, and again, with no scientific objective, we pulled the pages in Russian from the same sources to see how the perception of the candidates might change. Being a socialist apparently doesn’t make you more popular in Russia these days: both candidates received a much higher negative sentiment.

This analysis is just a quick example of how easy it is to run a real-time opinion analysis (for the public, or your customers) using a sophisticated and flexible text analytics engine. With engines like our Cogito, this is just the tip of the iceberg; you can run parallel analysis on content in different languages and extract pure sentiment, as well as various emotions, and more.
