Expert System and VejoPark the enterprise incubator for technology, new media and digital content, today announce a collaboration with the Crisis Unit for Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the development of a software platform for the identification and real-time selection of important information from the Web.

The solution, which is already in use, is the result of collaboration between Vejo Park’s G3Docs software and Expert System’s Cogito semantic software.

G3Docs takes advantage of a specially configured crawler that, thanks to a distributed architecture, creates a specialized search engine that monitors specific web sites. The system gives visibility to information for predetermined topics or subjects within pre-established parameters. G3Docs is an application of distributed calculation that has the advantage of being able to batch process large volumes of data.

Cogito extends semantic search capabilities to all formats of information, and goes beyond the limits of traditional search engines that limit themselves to keyword based technology, which is unable to understand the meanings of words and phrases. The Cogito semantic platform allows immediate access to useful information for the decision making processes, making it possible to:

  • Intercept and distinguish between useful and irrelevant information.
  • Automatically understand the importance of information from search results.
  • Identify topics in real time and extract important entities, dates, numbers, proper names, concepts, etc.
  • Connect important information, no matter how disparate.

“The Ministry’s selection confirms the strategic potential of semantic technology,” said Maurizio Mencarini, Sales Director, Intelligence Division of Expert System. “The ability to understand the meanings of words is fundamental for organizations like the Crisis Unit when monitoring and analyzing large volumes of data. Cogito makes it possible for the Ministry to filter out background noise and quickly identify the most important, relevant data useful for assistance activities.”

“The web is an enormous container of knowledge that is in constant growth, and although it makes it difficult to distinguish the useful from the useless, the true from the false and the old from the new represents a great opportunity for companies and institutions to be more effective and competitive.,” said Claudio Vaccarella, CEO of Vejo Park. “The work we are making with G3Docs is really in the direction of creating a reliable, high performing, intelligent filter that makes it possible to create a web based on their interests. This project is in the initial phases at Vejo Park and is one the main candidates to spin off between the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012.”
